Solar panel maintenance and repairs in Edinburgh

Solar panel maintenance, servicing and repairs in Edinburgh and the Lothians, from inverter faults to monitoring that has stopped reporting, with cleaning and bird proofing where a roof needs them. More than half of Edinburgh's residents live in flats and the Old and New Towns are a World Heritage Site, so before booking we say whether a job needs shared access or a word with the council.

How we cover Edinburgh

We take work across Edinburgh and the Lothians, and elsewhere in Scotland. We have no office in Scotland; we are based in Warrington. Each visit is planned around the job, so we ask what the system is, what the monitoring shows and how the roof is reached before we book anything.

The quickest start is a screenshot of your monitoring app or a photo of the inverter display on WhatsApp, or a call on 0800 772 3611. Sometimes that is enough to tell you nothing is wrong.

What Edinburgh buildings mean for maintenance

More than half the city lives in flats. At the 2022 Census, 56% of Edinburgh's residents lived in a flat or apartment. On a shared building, getting to the roof often means common stairs, a roof hatch and other owners who need to know, so tell us early who else is involved and we will work to their arrangements.

Fifty conservation areas and a World Heritage Site. Edinburgh has 50 conservation areas, and the Old and New Towns have been a World Heritage Site since 1995. The council says conservation areas have extra rules on building work. A service, a clean or an inverter check doesn't change how a building looks. If a repair would mean moving panels, swapping them for a different type or fixing anything new to the roof, check with the City of Edinburgh Council first. We will tell you before we start if your job is one of those.

Gulls on flat roof sections. Lesser black-backed gulls nest on the flat roof sections of buildings in and around Edinburgh, and an array on or next to a flat roof gives them shelter. Gulls, like all birds, are protected by law in Scotland, and a nest in use can't be disturbed. Bird proofing goes on once the nest is empty, so the gap is closed before they return.

What "maintenance" usually turns out to be. Most inverters last somewhere between ten and fifteen years, against panels rated for twenty-five or more, so on a system around a decade old with a sudden drop in generation the inverter is the first thing we check. A fair number of calls also turn out to be the monitoring losing its wi-fi while the panels work perfectly well. We tell you which before any work starts, and repair where repair makes sense.

Your network operator in Edinburgh

How grid approval works

SP Energy Networks owns and runs the electricity network in Edinburgh and the Lothians, under its SP Distribution licence. It is the network company, not the firm that bills you.

A service or a clean doesn't involve them. Changing an inverter or adding a battery can, and we deal with SP Energy Networks for you as part of the job.

Questions from Edinburgh customers

Who does solar panel maintenance and repairs in Edinburgh?

DB Energy does, for homes and businesses across Edinburgh, including inverter replacement and systems another company installed. We are MCS certified (NIC-601172) and a RECC member (00075024), based in Warrington, and we reply to every enquiry within two working days.

My panels are in a conservation area. Do repairs need permission?

A service, clean or inverter check doesn't change how the building looks. If a repair would change what is on the roof, such as moving or swapping panels, check with the City of Edinburgh Council first. We will tell you before we start if your job falls into that group.

Gulls nest on our flat roof next to the panels. When can bird proofing go on?

Once the nest is no longer in use. Nests in use are protected by law in Scotland, so we fit mesh after the birds have gone, which closes the gap before they come back the following year.

How much does solar panel maintenance cost in Edinburgh?

A routine service on a home system costs around £200 to £300, and a replacement inverter typically costs £1,200 to £2,000 fitted. We tell you which you are looking at, and the price, before any work starts.
